July 8, 2001. What many of us had always feared happened for the first time. Severe stonns left several inches of rain in four hours in the southern West Virginia coalfields. Incredible flash floods resulted. Entire communities were swept away. Houses on hillsides were damaged. This was the first of six such floods. These were not your typical "the water is rising" flooding. The devastation of the environment by mountaintop removal coal mining and steep slope timbering took its toll. Coalfield residents tell their own story as we search for the causes of the floods.
